The big free-tailed bat (Nyctinomops maculatum) is larger than the Brazilian free-tailed bat, but also has the distinct "free tail" that extends beyond the uropatagium (membranes between the legs). This bat is found from California to Texas and south to South American countries. Based on acoustic recordings, it is believed to be widespread in Colorado, despite difficulty capturing individuals. This bat roosts in caves and rock crevices and cracks near pinyon-juniper, desert scrub, or arid canyonlands.
