The canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus), formerly the western pipistrelle, is one of the smallest bats (4 g) in North America. It is typically gray in color, but with a distinct black "mask" on its face. It is found throughout aridlands of western North America, from Washington to Mexico. In Colorado, it is found in western lowlands and extreme southeastern corner. When in flight it takes a slow, erratic path as it hunts insects.
