It is aso one of the more common bats, being found in urban settings roosting in attics, barns, and other structures. During the summer months look for this bat flying in towns and cities throughout the U.S., but come fall this bat migrates to cooler temperatures to hibernate. In Fort Collins, Colorado where the largest population study of big brown bats was conducted, the urban colony disperses to higher elevations to find cracks and crevices ideal for hibernating.
